The coming of the railway from Paris resulted in Henri Matisse visiting the town in May 1905 and taking a room with sea views from where he could paint. He brought with him his friend André Derain. That summer, they painted more than 40 oil paintings capturing the landscape, the light and energetic colours of Collioure.
